Sligo Orpheus Choir at National Day of Commemoration 13th July 2025

We had broken up for the summer and were delighted to be summoned by our Musical Director, Ciara Murphy, following an invitation to perform at the Sligo National Day of Commemoration ceremony at Sligo Town Hall on the 13th July.

After selecting some old and new music to perform and a rehearsal in Calry Church, we assembled in the Mayor’s Parlour for our customary warm up and rehearsal. We took our places outside and awaited commencement of proceedings.

The MC for the event was Edel Mhic Amhlaidh from Sligo County Council, who welcomed and introduced those taking part. Father Pat Lombard, Ven. Patrick Bamber, Rev. Alan Mitchell, Emilie Mpoy and Rev. Daniel Caldwell, representing Sligo's churches,  led an act of commemoratoin and worship.

Lt. Kilcoyne read "An Irish Airman Foresees His Death" by W.B. Yeats. Music was provided by Sligo Orpheus Choir and Trevor Horan on uilleann pipes.

The final part of the ceremony involved the laying of the wreath by the Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council, Donal Gilroy followed by a minute's silence. We finished by singing the National Anthem and it was lovely to hear those assembled join with us in full voice.

It was an honour to be part of such an occasion and one we will remember.
